About Us

parivaar kerala

‘Parivaar’ (meaning Family) is an association of parents of children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability and multiple disabilities). Parivaar Kerala is the state federation having affiliates in all the districts of Kerala State. At national level, we are affiliated to Parivaar - NCPO (National Confederation of Parents Organisations). National Parivaar was formed in the year 1996 with 22 parents’ associations as its members. Today it is the largest confederation in the IDD sector in the world having a membership of almost 300 parents’ organisations and Civil Societies in 31 States of India.

Parivaar is mainly an advocacy organization and works to empower and secure rights of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PwIDDs). Parivaar also engages in various initiatives to create awareness among parents and parents’ organisations and also acts as nodal networking organization to share experience and advocate with the Government for the rights and provisions for PwIDDs.

In early 80’s, parents’ organisations were functioning in several districts of Kerala in different names. Sri. P.B. George who founded Mithram Rehabilitation Complex Trust at Ernakulam convened a meeting of these district organisations and formed “State council for exceptional children” in the year 1994. Consequently, it was named as Parivaar Kerala in 2010 and affiliated to Parivaar - NCPO.

Parivaar Kerala and its members have been networking with State government and stake holders in the disability sector to facilitate policies and their implementation for empowering PwIDDs. The awareness programs and other activities of Parivaar have been helpful to parents to a great extend.
