Remembering George sir
Shri P.B.George, one of the stalwarts of Parents’ Movement in India and the founder of Mithram Rehabilitation Complex for the persons with intellectual disability, passed away on 11th May 2021 at Ernakulam, Kerala. He was under treatment for heart ailment but was active and committed to his work in the field of disability and managing his own brain child, Mithram, till the end.
Shri George was one of the pioneer leaders behind the formation of NFPA. At the same time he was very keen on putting the Kerala State Federation (now Parivaar Kerala) on a sound footing and worked earnestly to establish
district associations in all districts of the State. Shri George played a pivotal role in obtaining Scholarship for students with ID in Kerala, Aswaskiran (caregiver allowance) and disability pension. He was the driving force behind the formation of Group Care 10, SHGs for PwIDDs, in 2006, the fore-runner of Kudumbasree (Neighbourhood) Groups for empowering parents. Shri George always advocated for a decent remuneration and better service conditions to Special Educators.
The three acre Mithram complex – residences, special school, vocational training, sheltered employment (organic farming, poultry, flour mill and making note books, carry bags, candle, detergents etc.) with scientific wage
pattern – remains a monument to his remarkable vision.
Shri P.B.George was a leader whose actions inspired others to dream more and do more. He has been the guiding force, with his gentle, unassuming and selfless nature, to bring out the best in every Parivaar worker of the state and
has turned many mirrors into windows. He never imposed his opinion on others and always showed patience to hear others.
PARIVAAR salutes the departed great leader and conveys deep condolences to the bereaved family.
